What the hell happened to Mozilla? Weren't they supposed to be the good guys? Maybe I was just deluding myself, but I used to believe in them. I still believe in what they claim to stand for, but it really doesn't seem like they do. Did they ever?

Also, how much unnecessary data gets sent just so companies know what unnecessary ads to serve you. Adblockers and antitracking software as environmentalism.

There's a free speech maximalist position on Mastodon that goes something like this: the promise of federation is that a user on any instance can communicate with a user on any other instance. Instance blocks break this promise, and should therefore only be used in extreme cases such as illegal content or spam.

I want to point out that this position views federated social networks as *only a performance optimization* of a centralized social network. 1/?

since it is /almost/ topical, I afford myself yet another trip down memory way.

the signal level around the topic of searchability of content on mastodon has gone up by a significant factor since the last time it looped through the consensus.

you know what other federated protocol had a search problem?

...for decentralizing search for the fediverse and maybe do a good enough job with the free implementation that commercial silo versions don't make any economic sense and then mastodon et al. can implement the necessary endpoints to allow for search queries and so on and so forth.

the toot-lab counts the number of instances with which it federates and displays it proudly. I would like the search-lab to announce the number of queryable sources with which it federates.

if somebody could have a flash of inspiration right about here and make this happen that'd be really heckin cool.
