@jwisser yuuuup. It's mostly where it comes to applying knowledge that the trouble starts - planning ahead for due dates, making yourself do things that are difficult or stressful or boring, keeping track of multiple assignments or priorities... I spent years trying to come to terms with just having 'less willpower' than everyone else and that I'd probably never be able to accomplish any of the things I wanted to do. It's really not a comfortable way to feel - people with ADHD are also extremely prone to low self esteem, depression, and extreme sensitivity to criticism due to a long history of messing things up, for which we wrongly blame ourselves.
@jwisser I mostly just got 'she's smart enough that she never had to try hard for good grades as a kid and now she doesn't know how to work hard/study properly'.
@jwisser It's extremely common for ADHD to not be diagnosed until late in life, provided the person is smart enough to compensate and still get good grades; and most people's perceptions of it are based on outdated stereotypes of hyperactivity - there's more than one way for it to present; most of the underdiagnosed are inattentive-types, who are more 'disorganized daydreamer' than 'hyper shit disturber'. So no one notices - they just think you're lazy or disorganized or 'not applying yourself' - I got that last one from pretty much every teacher I ever had, but only 1 or 2 ever suspected anything more. :P
@jwisser :) I had the same feeling. I figured it out when a friend started describing some of his symptoms and I was like, "but... same??? is it not like that for everyone????"
turns out, no, no it is not. and at least 3 of my friends have since been diagnosed after I started telling them about it :P almost like we got along for a reason...
@jwisser uuugh. that makes it even worse. ):
@jwisser uuugh getting a diagnosis can take ages. it took me over 6 months to see a psych after my doctor referred me, and it was supposed to take 9 - I got bumped up because someone else cancelled.
@jwisser it's like,,,,, they decide to do something,,,,, and then they actually DO it???? what is UP with that
thanks, ADHD-induced executive dysfunction
lmao I actually had a conversation very like this in high school that I now hold up as an early example of executive function issues
I was asking a friend how she managed to actually, like, DO her homework and
"Well I'll get a chocolate bar and tell myself I can't eat it until I'm done."
"...but how do you not just... eat it anyway?"
"I just... don't?"
"BUT HOW DO YOU DO THAT, THAT'S WHAT I'M ASKING MAN, YOU GOTTA BE SKIPPING A STEP"
someone just posted this picture on twitter and it is genuinely the most Me thing i've ever seen in my life https://witches.town/media/MTYkEFODkCpco52mAxY
