@jwisser I mean I did still enjoy re-reading the original Pern stuff, but there are definitely some cringey parts, and I haven't come across as many in his. just one case of an iffy age gap. plus some of his mains are discovering poly stuff and honestly it's just rly cute and I've really rarely come across that in fiction
@jwisser yeah, honestly the original few Pern books - the ones with F'lar and Lessa and stuff - have some preeetty iffy sexual stuff and aren't particularly 'modern' politically, though she got better with time when she went back and did the prequels. I've found Todd's more in line with my politics so far, though I'd probably have to reread it a few times to be sure and there's still one or two iffy bits.
These are at the beginning of the 3rd pass - similar setup to the old ones with the same characters spanning multiple books over a fairly long period.
@jwisser it's definitely still got some of that stuff, so if you didn't like it before you might not consider it that much of an improvement :p there's still the 'blues/greens are more likely to impress gay men' stuff, but I find his sexual politics a bit more palatable than hers - some of her stuff was pretty much dubcon, though I didn't really figure that out until my more recent re-reads. his has a lot less of that. and I don't think Anne ever had any queer women, and there's definitely at least one now. And I find the blue/green riders are a little better written/represented.

@grime_witch well thank how you
@Hiraelle ngl I'm not as big a fan of his writing style - his sense of pacing isn't as good, he can be a bit confusing, and he's way too enamored of convoluted time travel plots :p but he made it gayer and actually writes pretty good women, and I like his focus on teenage girls in particular, so I've decided to forgive him.
like it always had inherent queerness to it but now it's more front-and-center than ever and so many girls with varied races and personalities in leadership roles and apparently the protagonist of the next one is a queer girl and a leader wow
the series is dragonriders of Pern, originally by Anne McCaffrey, but now it's been taken over by her son Todd and I was worried bc dude I guess, but wow suddenly there is so much explicit queerness and now a bunch of polyamory and so many lovely intimate female friendships and so many of the characters are strong, intelligent, compassionate teenage girls I love this
good job Todd you can stay
tfw!! you're reading new additions to an old favorite series!! and now it's full of excellent girl characters and queerness and polyamory all portrayed in healthy and positive ways that are approved by the canonical culture!!

today I downloaded a whole pile of songs I loved in high school and forgot about for years so I am just wallowing in nostalgia and it's a good time
the best thing about the multi-photo feature on Instagram is the weird glitch photos it saves to your phone and I'm gonna be upset if they fix it https://witches.town/media/LDAJVAeqlgiEFFVQiC8
