is there masto equivalent to discord i.e entirely aping the interface of popular alternative but making is open source / decentralised?

You can test it on riot.im/app for example (keep in mind if you register on matrix.org some functionalities as the online status are disabled).
Or rocket.chat, but I've never tested it.

@candle theres matrix but the interface is bad and getting your own instance to run is a pain in the butt
@candle matrix is good but the only real client for it is riot which has horrible ui/ux
they just announced they got funding and desperately want to hire someone to fix all their ui though, so maybe in a year it'll be good
@candle if you care less about the federation part there's tonsss of decent clones tho! mattermost, rocketchat... i think searching for "open-source slack" instead of discord might turn 'em up better
and i ask this as someone who has never and will never use the voice chat in discord
