As a native English speaker, it's always seemed bizarre to me that in some languages (most notably Romance languages), inanimate objects have gender.

What about makes Spanish chairs so feminine ("las sillas") and French candy so masculine ("le bonbon")?

Curiously, I've noticed that the genders inanimate objects are almost always the same in every Romance language, which leads me to think that this system is very, very old, and probably dates back to at least the time of the Roman Empire.
