@ann_leckie Next up is the latest issue of Jacobin, which arrived a few days ago. So I'm not gonna review that one. Not sure after that. Might be the next book in The Expanse series (I think I'm on six or so?) or… I don't remember what's in the stack.
#books #review Finished Provenance by @ann_leckie last night. Like her other books, people will talk about pronouns a lot and, while that is cool, they will completely be missing the things that make her stories fundamentally good. This one takes place after but doesn't flow from the Ancillary trilogy, so has spoilers. I really liked the main character's attitude and the way she thought about herself. It made her very real. I really enjoyed it. Recommended.
The 6yo didn't know what a funeral was, so we're talking as a family about death and answering questions and talking about friends who had to miss school because a grandparent died and then, the 6yo apparently gets done with the conversation: "Sharks have a HUNDRED teeth!"

Shit, that was tough. I can see why all the right wing nutjobs have their panties in a knot over having to talk to their kids about it now.
I really didn't want to be shopping everything I typed in my phone through A Google server, so I switched back to SwiftKey from GBoard, but the UX decisions on GBoard are just every single one the exact way I want them and SwiftKey has all these little friction points. I would pay money for an iOS keyboard that worked just like GBoard but without the Google AI business being interposed in the suggestions. Note that SwiftKey's suggestions aren't quite as good, but that's not the problem.

When you sign up to give with #Liberapay, make sure you add a regular donation for Liberapay itself.
When I work from home (like today) I do this ridiculous thing: I get thirsty (NOT THAT KIND), go to the kitchen to get a drink, sit back down and set it next to me, begin work and forget about drink, realize I am still thirsty, go to the kitchen to get a drink... etc.
At work, I don't seem to have this problem. I work and drink water interleaved with no issues. 🤷🏻♂️
The thing that bothers me most about VC funding of open source work is that it is always done in the interest of creating an atmosphere where the parts are ready to assemble to build the next profitable enterprise—any humanity is purely coincidental, and thus a rare output from a system not designed to output it.
We should publicly fund open work, for humanity’s sake.

Well. Not only did it snow in Austin (flurries that don't stick or even really reach the ground happen almost every year), but it also actually stuck on the ground, which occurs only every ~3 years based on my gutcheck of having lived here my whole life. Bleh. Cold is bad.
