@benhamill super indigenous language use is wonderful

no expert but both english and japanese are less colloquial where they import, but the native stuff is *all* whimsy and it's tits

The English phrase "take to" is sorta weird, y'all. Like, obviously, you can take something to a place, but I mean the other meanings. "They've really taken to each other," means they've become quite close. "He took to singing," means he became good at singing or at least started doing it a lot. But, "She took to the skies," doesn't mean she and the skies are getting along or that she is good at... the skies(😕), but that she is flying? I guess she took HERSELF to the skies? So it's more like the first meaning I mentioned?

Is anyone on here experienced with #Braille? I have a question I need to ask about a handmade gift that I'm commissioning soon for the person I'd usually ask about these things. Preferably looking for someone who uses Braille regularly. Please boost.

Folks, the company I work for is looking for a UX/UI designer, and it's a fully remote position. Also, no degrees required.

You can take a look at the offer here: laterpay.workable.com/j/50D2C7

Or toot me any questions

Heh. I meant to attach a picture. Here's a picture of the book I'll read next. Peeking argyle sock for scale.

I forgot: Next up if Provenance by Ann Leckie. I thought I might change gears to fantasy or something, but screw it. Maybe while I'm reading this, I'll get my ducks in a row to pick a good anarchism 101 book and use that for a gear shift. Or I might need something just fun and affirming. We'll see. I have several books by authors I love in my stack, but most of it is really heavy stuff. I'm open to suggestions, BTW.

Finished The Stars Are Legion by Kameron Hurley just now. It's a SUPER WEIRD world and I really love that about it. It's emotionally pretty trying and plain gross and semi-body-horrorey, so it's not for everyone, but I really liked it. Hurley's 3-word summary was something like "violent space lesbians", which is true, but there's not a lot of gaying around or anything. There's not a lot of time when that would be super appropriate. And the relationships that do exist are super not healthy. There's just no men at all in the world.

I really like Hurley's stuff and if you've enjoyed her other books, you probably will like this. I wouldn't start here, though.

urban transportation is a prisoner's dilemma. if everyone uses transit, everyone gets to their destination quickly and smoothly. if some people defect and take cars, their trips are faster at the expense of everyone else. if everyone defects, everyone ends up parked in traffic.

the solution is to remove the individual benefits of defecting, by prioritizing infrastructure for transit and banning cars in urban centers. most US cities do the opposite, and that's why getting around is so miserable

Why is there 🉑 but not reject or deny or... inverse? Like... the short version is surely "historical reasons to do with non-coordinating Japanese telecoms", but how was that not corrected at some point? Bleh.

Tozen At Lowes:
Tozen was smashing flower pots at Lowes when his student, a store clerk, approaches in agitation.
"Tozen! Why are you destroying these pots?"
The master shook his head.
"I have destroyed nothing. The void which constitutes the pot still remains."
The student-clerk was incredulous
"I do not see this void."
Tozen smiled "Look around you."
The clerk did as he was told.
When he looked back to Tozen he saw nothing, and was enlightened.

Good morning, witches and wicks.

INTERIOR, EVENING
An Italian food restaurant where kids' meals come with a free xsmall gelato.
6yo: Did I eat enough for ice cream?
Me: Yes, but you need to wait until the rest of us finish, so we can do it together.
6yo: But I want ice cream.
Me: I know. You need to exercise patience.
6yo: YOU need to exercise giving ME a CHANCE.

Points for audacity, I guess. But we still waited until everyone else was done before getting ice cream.
