@Vann I thought that shadow dom was, like, when there's a new waiter and they follow a more experienced waiter around learning how to waiter. But with, you know, being a dom.

@Jo I like that. Now that you point that out, I just one one "reply" button that if the recipient count is 10 or less it just normal reply-all and if it's more than that puts you into some kind of work flow that makes you pick. It could make suggestions based on activity in the thread and whatever. It could pop open email lists (assuming it was integrated with the server like Outlook SHOULD be) to pick out individuals, etc.

@Jo I mean—reply all is often very useful. Just… I wish people would show some intentionality about using email, whether in putting people on mailing lists, putting people in the To or Cc field or what they type in the body. People are SO BAD at email I don't understand.

@srol I cannot abide email systems that don't have self-service email list membership. I shouldn't have to ASK someone to get off a list. I shouldn't have to set up a fucking filter.

At work, I am apparently on some random email list that has nothing to do with me. And so are a TON of other people. Today, someone sent an email to that list (among a bunch of other lists, so I don't even know which list is wrong). I am trapped in a cascade of people writing, "Please take me off this chain" as if their name had been individually put there and "Please stop replying all" as if the reply address wasn't a GIANT FUCKOFF EMAIL LIST.

🤦🏻‍♂️ I used to work in email, so I get really frustrated how many people don't have even a shaky mental model of how email works. I realize that's not fair, but 🤷🏻‍♂️.

@WelshPixie It's a bit early, but some cool things are likely to happen, so I'm optimistic. 😃

Good morning, everyone. I hope you have an awesome day. 💖

I believe I shall retire to bed to read and then fall asleep. Be well, friends, and rest when you need it.

hey, art people - can you recommend me books on utilizing the formal elements?

I've got a fairly strong aptitude for composition, but feel I'm held back a lack of formal education or training on the matter.

(boosts appreciated!)

@shel @witchfynder_finder So maybe I don't have pointer toes, but I have a pointer nose?

@witchfynder_finder @shel It FEELS like I'm pointing with either the top of my head or my nose, though...

@shel @witchfynder_finder @chr I don't point things out with my toes, so I don't think I have a pointer toe.

@shel @chr @witchfynder_finder Looks like "pinkie" (Etymonline doesn't see "pinky" as having to do with fingers) is just this, so I weon't even summarize:

"the little finger," 1808, in Scottish, from Dutch pinkje, diminutive of pink "little finger," of uncertain origin.

@witchfynder_finder @chr @shel "Thumb" apparently has roots in PIE meaning "to swell" and in Proto-Germanic is related to an adjective that just meant "thick".

"Index" is from Latin "indicare" with is "in/upon/on/into" + "proclaim" or, basically "to point out". They also used "index" to mean the finger you're thinking of among other things. So it looks like a straight-up borrowing. Looks like "index" was used to mean the forefinger in the 14th century, then fell out for the book thing, and "index finger" as a phrase popped back up in 1768.
