✨Ben Hamill✨ @benhamill

I was thinking about getting the regular drivers on my bus routes/times something around the holidays. Just to show appreciation and whatever. Generally, I'd reach for some kind of baked good, but IDK... I feel weird just straight up asking after their dietary restrictions. I'm not exactly chatty with them normally.

What do you think, friends? What's some good alternatives?

@benhamill bake the ultimate baked good for every diet restriction... gluten free vegan nut free soy free

@agaric Not having experience with working in those restrictions already... I am not confident in my ability to make it yummy. Which makes me think I should just reach for, like, a caramel apple or some shit.

@benhamill hmmm maybe kinda weird but like a gift card to a coffee shop or something might be nice? just a small one, about the price of a drink

@agaric Yeah. You don't think that's too, like, yuppie of a gift? It would basically have to be Starbucks to ensure that it's not a giant pain in the ass for them to actually use, since I have no idea where these folks live.

@benhamill yeaah like.. i never condone starbucks but it definitely would be the easiest. i'm not sure. seems like a gift outside of monetary context would be nice. if i think of anything i'll let you know!

@benhamill A pretty tin of tea? Even if they don't drink it themselves, it keeps a while and is nice to have in the cupboard for guests.

@erinbee Hmmmmm. 🤔 I had not considered this, but I kind of like it. Because I like tea, myself.

@benhamill gift card for a common place to get a tea or coffee near you. Maybe look for one located near the start/end of their line shift. That way it doesn’t matter what they drink. And they can regift to a kid’s teacher or friend if unwanted. Or a tip...which is weird. But I remember my parents doing for the newspaper person.

@ruth Hmmmm, yeah. I am not sure how to determine where the routes start and end, but I bet I can figure it out. Thanks.

@benhamill my drivers change off near the library, which is near several cafés. So I’m lucky.

@benhamill here people often give coupons to bookstores, which I think is nice (though maybe not convenient for everyone)

@Eve Wow that's kind of awesome. If I felt like we had a more-literate-in-general (in the sense of reading often, not being able to read at all) culture, I would LOVE this idea. But I feel like a lot of people don't read for fun here. Which I will never understand, but... 🤷🏻‍♂️

@benhamill I think the key point is that people can also use them to buy magazines and comics (and also they can be used at any bookstore). for the US case it means picking the right bookstore is key ... (but then the appeal of magazines is def not what it used to be)

@Eve Aaahhhh. Yeah, I see. That's still awesome.
