Dammit, Nvidia. I'm trying to play Stardew Valley on Linux, probably one of the least demanding games of the decade, and you can't even do that without tearing. My 7 year old Intel integrated graphics make this game look better.
Nvidia Linux drivers suck so much. Now that the AMD open source drivers are reasonably stable, this is the last Nvidia PC GPU I'm ever going to own. Your software is bad and you should feel bad.
@frostotron their drivers are frequently bad on the windows side, too. it's absolutely required to head over to r/nvidia whenever new ones come out to see if they're giving people ruinous problems or are safe to "upgrade" to.
i'm regularly six months behind because it's just not worth introducing all those random bugs and regressions into a stable system
i also had a really bad time with AMD 3+ years ago but i hear they're better now for win drivers. hard to believe, but who knows.
@alyx I set up a friend's older AMD/Intel system on both OSes a few months ago. fglrx is totally obsolete, and the radeon driver is now better than fglrx ever was. The install process on Linux was just install the package and reboot. No awkward quirks or workarounds, just like a driver should be.
Honestly, though, I don't remember the Windows process so it must not have been much of a headache.
@frostotron one problem is windows 10 (at least with nvidia) will automatically update your gfx driver without asking. afaik the only way to stop this behavior is with a dumb hack where you rename a .dll
@alyx Yeah, things like that are a big part of why I stopped using Windows. Lots of minor annoyances required some weird hack like that or worse, unverified third party software.
