I just got a fancy 24/8 channel cable modem, so I'm no longer limited to 60/10mbit internet.
Still debating on whether or not to actually get a faster plan tho. Max from the TPIA I'm using is 250/20, but there's also a 150/15 option.
Meanwhile Rogers is currently offering 1G/30 plans for a (1-year) discounted rate that's less than the TPIA 250/20… and they won't let me use this nice new modem I got.
@kepstin 1G/30, jesus that asymmetry
@staticsafe @kepstin for real, you have to work hard to be that lopsided
@djsundog @staticsafe The weirdness of DOCSIS3 specs doesn't help. With 24 downstream channels you max out at 1029Mbps. With 8 upstream channels you max out at 206Mbps, but I think Rogers is currently only using 4 upstream due to equipment limitations, and giving lower rated speeds to account for oversubscription.
@staticsafe @djsundog my modem's currently locked on to 23 of 24 downstream channels at QAM256, which is close enough to getting the 1G speed.
But upstream I'm locked onto only 3 channels, and one is at half-rate - this is only enough to manage ~15Mbit.
I assume they must configure the modem for more upstream channels with the faster plans…
@kepstin @staticsafe this is so much madness - if I worked for a Canadian cable company I'd be unemployed
@djsundog @staticsafe @kepstin meanwhile, comcast cable, a monopoly, was down in oakland and other parts of the bay area for 23 hours starting at 1 a.m. monday
@alyx @staticsafe @kepstin got all their repair crews in the markets where they're forced to compete ;)
