i hate playing secret of mana but i want to love it due to the about one half of the soundtrack and one third of the visuals which are great. the gameplay, esp. the glitchy, stilted battle system, is irredeemable though

but when the music/atmosphere is good it is GOOD damn fuk

never tried the sequel. i should.

@alyx me and my roommate played through it with a patch that removed the awful "charge" mechanics in battle (any attack did 100% damage) and it was a lot better

@Xkeeper whoa that is a great improvement, though wouldn't the difficulty still be non-existent?

(sounds like i am not the only one who dislikes this beloved game?)

@alyx yeah, but at least it wasn't annoying. oops, i pushed a button a frame too soon and blew it

besides, i don't really play games for super challenges, i just want to have fun. real life is hard enough

@Xkeeper
that's legit

for me, there's fewer things that keep me engaged with games these days but sometimes the feeling of facing/overcoming a challenge can be one of them

@alyx yeah, diff strokes for diff folks. 's why the ability to choose your level of challenge is an important accessibility thing

@alyx Legend of Mana is one of my favorite games, though (I feel) very misunderstood because you weren't really the main character - something fairly normal now, but unheard of when it came out.

@thindol that's cool. i know very little about how it actually plays since it got so much flak i wrote it off.

@alyx It's basically a 2.5-D beat-em-up - with a large, but optional, house/crafting RPG system. The AI is derpy in a hilarious way and it has OK co-op.

If you've played Odin Sphere it'll be very familiar.

Most reviews at the time blasted it for not being a traditional JRPG where you are the hero - instead, you follow 3 distinct stories (+ side stories) as you help each story's MC Do The Thing and/or Save the X. (The Jumi are my favorite story.)

@ramona srsly tho i've always hated the look so much i didn't care to try it. i have heard it actually has merit, but it's hard for me to get past that artstyle

@alyx yeah, it's not as colorful as the other Squaresoft games, which is a strike against it. but there's a lot of charm underneath it that makes it worthwhile.
