it's interesting that you can look at furry / anime / whatever art / cg from 5+ years ago and tell it's 5+ years old.
i guess the best artists' technical skills have just kept improving. perhaps the technology they use (photoshop, etc.) has improved too?
@alyx imho I'd say it's 60% style of that era, and 40% technology & how familiar the overall community was with it
((I vividly remember there being a split in the community on whether you should use a computer mouse or a graphics tablets to make digital art))
@alyx i wonder about this too and think it may be down to fashionability in a lot of cases. People get hyped about a technique or style and everyone scrambles to learn it and perfect it for a while. And so you get stuff that is better in some ways but not usually in a uniform way. Technology shifts the possibility frontier over by making it easier to learn new stuff or adapt an old style into a modern workflow, but it's not purely driven by that.
