in the right hands the thing was capable of incredibly rich, bassy, strange, even harsh tones. used wisely i think it produced more interesting sounds than the SNES' sample-based, memory-starved SPC700 (not to say that chip didn't deliver greatness, too)
but great MD audio was very dependent on a composer's skill and chosen sound driver; many games, especially western-made, failed to find a good balance, which lead to an inferior reputation among many
