Get trained to handle your shit or find something else to do with your life.

You say "They didn't comply with orders."

I say: "The way you delivered those orders scared the shit out of them." It scared the shit out of me just listening to the audio. You don't get to play the I-was-afraid-for-my-life card while ignoring how your actions put them in fear of their life.

The difference is that you're tooled up, have your buddies with you, and traffic in fear as your profession. They're unarmed, alone, and had no opportunity to prepare for your behavior.

Just finished listening to Radiolab's episode on the reasonableness standard.

There is nothing reasonable about going into public tooled up yet wholly unprepared to deescalate the chaos introduced by your own means and methods.

There's nothing reasonable about expecting someone who has no training for resolving violent situations to respond to gun-totting men bellowing at them with anything else but flight-inducing terror.

You best have the training, because the public doesn't.

Every police officer benefits from department and professional institutions to obtain extensive training in deescalating and safely managing encounters with the public.

Any random person has no such opportunity for training or resources to draw on when confronted with terror-inducing situation of bulked-up bellowing men threatening violence.

An officer unprepared to manage their own fear in such encounters should demand better training or else find another line of work.

Period.
