The fist romance novels in 19eme century advocated woman's freedom (to work, love, married with free choose). It frightened conservative writer, who started there own romance novel, with the schema the woman meet a bad men, get lost, saved the man from its bad habits/get rescued by a nice man, get back to the kitch... house to take care of their children ('caus you know working his bad). And it's this model who win and is still sell know.
