I looked at my old screenshots and discovered that I once rescued a Kerbal using a claw meant for attaching the craft to asteroids.
The caption on the first pic was "I couldn't grab the rocket, so I grabbed the next best thing."

@envgen In this instance Bob was even out of monopropellant in his jetpack. So I had to use the rcs on the ship to get close enough for him to grab the ladder
I couldn't just leave poor Bob up there!

@typhlosion pretty much. I actually have done Apollo style moon landings too.

@TipsyTentacle there is a mod that allows multiplayer. It's not exactly competitive though, you just all exist in the same game

This is the kind of thing that makes KSP so much fun!
Having something go horribly wrong and needing to make daring efforts to save a rapidly deteriorating situation

Today, I tried sending Bob to land on Minmus. I failed. Oh, he landed. He just didn't have enough fuel left to get back.
So I had him use what little fuel he had left to throw his ship up as far as possible. Then I made him collect his experiments, jump out, and use his jetpack to get himself into orbit leaving the rocket behind to crash.
Then I sent another ship to go pick him up. I got Bob back safely and a tidy bit of science out of it. #ksp
