@Angle @Ulfra_Wolfe STO did something like that. Hugh (the borg they rescued) set up his own collective for rescued borg called "The CoOperative" (maybe they sell Fairtrade stuff too) that had all the borg attributes, but were (mostly) friendly.

Idea: The Borg, but nice. They have nanites, but instead of being freaky techno zombies, they use them for perfect health and augmenting their physical form. Theyre note all the same, they come in a profusion of variety. They don't lose their individuality, they gain the ability to communicate with each other with unparalleled efficiency. They don't try to conquer or assimilate anyone, they just seek to learn about them and allow any who wish to join them. Etc, etc.

A lot like the Culture, but with less reliance on machine gods and more enhancement of their own abilities. :/
