kinda realizing that all the reasons that I tell people I prefer short hair have absolutely nothing to do with looks

I've been conditioning myself for decades to regard _convenience_ as the chief reason to dress, do up my hair, &c. in a certain way but that's kinda rubbish, that's just because I convinced myself I wasn't worth effort

@kara_dreamer it's a thin line, but i say if you have an appetite to switch it up, it's worth the effort :)

@GlitchThief @kara_dreamer My long hair is a mess of tangles more often than not and I'm not the best at caring for it, but I still prefer it to short hair!

@Ulfra_Wolfe @kara_dreamer i've always worn my hair uh... well, long for a boy, but I wouldn't call it long. I don't really know how to grow hair out though. like, if i just leave it be it'll be a tangled mess all over my face... i know it requires at least a bit more effort than that haha

i have really curly hair and i've love to wear it in a more feminine style

@Ulfra_Wolfe @kara_dreamer @GlitchThief Two tips for growing your hair long: only shampoo three times a week tops (you can wash and condition every day), and make sure to get your hair cut. When getting your hair cut, only get about a half inch to an inch removed.

It seems odd, but the ends of your hair get damaged, causing the strands to dry out and stop growing. By getting your hair cut regularly, you help promote growth.

@GlitchThief @kara_dreamer @Ulfra_Wolfe @Ratttz plus one. also, allow the stylist to thin your hair a little every now and then with thinking shears; it'll help with shaping.

@kara_dreamer @makyo @Ratttz @Ulfra_Wolfe @GlitchThief Just a friendly reminder that all hair is different and what works for one type will be terrible for others.

I have super thin hair so instead of thinning shears some stylists will use a razor comb to provide a similar effect without thinning it more than it is already.

Also, my hair is greasy enough that I use conditioner before shampoo, washing every other day.

@mawr @kara_dreamer @makyo @Ratttz @GlitchThief I have pretty super greasy hair. Just one day without shampooing will result in enough grease that it can hurt if it gets into my eyes. Thanks for that advice!

But my hair is very thick and curly, haha.

@Ulfra_Wolfe Thick and curly hair can be really hard to work with; traditional hair care methods don't work well on it. The rule of thumb I've heard is to focus on frizz control by embracing (and contributing to) the greasiness, then focus on shaping the curls.

For that camp, coconut oil is a common suggestion for curly hair-- and never use shampoo. Just wash with lemon juice or similar.

Example of the immediate effects of coconut oil: imgur.com/qBZiLpx

@Ulfra_Wolfe (The most useful thing about the coconut oil treatment is that it keeps your hair from frizzing out during the day. A much more dramatic comparison would be a day after shampoo and conditioner versus a day after coconut oil; the former would have the start of an afro while the latter would look more or less the same as they started out.)

@mawr I think my hair is only slightly curly, then! It's certainly not as dramatic as my mom's.

@Ulfra_Wolfe Ahh! In that case, you might try just try some post-wash product, like a de-tangler or a leave-in conditioner for a similar effect. ^^
