Based on some things I am already hearing regarding v1.3, some advice.
As an admin, there is no need to be on the bleeding edge of upgrades.
Always test updates on a dev server.
Just my 2 bits.
Folks, if you require direct secure communications with someone on Mastodon, take it off Mastodon and use a secure E2E messenger.
Wire if you only want to provide a username to the other party.
Signal if you are comfortable with sharing your phone number with the other party.

As Mastodon grows, at some point there _will_ be a meltdown of some big instance into which tons of people put their trust and then the admin turns out not to be trustworthy (like the MtGox incident in Bitcoin). Even if it's a few hundred people affected, it will be major negative news.
People need to be educated about the role and power of instance admins.

@alyx Ah. That makes sense. Android got some weird "lockdown" stuff under the radar a few years ago, and IIRC that was one of them. Yay for Linux, though!
@alyx I think win10 is intentionally broken for booting anything else. It's really irritating. For my own laptop, you have to turn UEFI off in the BIOS before it'll even acknowledge anything but the Windows boot partition. 👢 💫 💻
can we pass a law requiring companies to unlock the bootloader once they stop supporting the device? so you can easily jailbreak/root your thing once they stop giving security updates themselves?
