unfortunately many western-made games used a terrible audio engine called GEMS which resulted in bad audio that imo severely hurt the system's sound rep

for some high-end example OSTs check out Sword of Vermilion, Gauntlet IV, Devilish, Time Trax, Sonic 1/2, Castle of Illusion, Contra Hard Corps, Castlevania Bloodlines, Thunderforce III/IV, Dynamite Headdy, etc. all Japanese audio drivers, all lovely to hear.
