Jobs done and shopping done, and now I could use my time to read a book or edit a novel manuscript, but — you may have guessed it already — I'm kinda tired right now. Let's see in a moment...
@Naoree The language nerd's dilemma: If there were less languages in the world, they could all be learnable. But how terrible the idea that there would be less languages!

Hi everyone! I made a translator bot that translates statuses it's mentioned in.
To use it, mention @translator (translator@toot.works) in your status, followed by the two-letter code for the language you want to translate to (e.g. "ja" for Japanese) (full list of possible codes here: https://christopher.su/projects/translator/). It uses English if no language is given.
Give it a try and toot me your suggestions and comments!

@danyork Replying to myself, I did ask about this on Reddit, and based on the answer I got there, this really is something very promising to wait for. The source code will be publicly available on a later stage.
Ahhh, today's work finally done! Time to check what in the witch has been going on here today.
Sooooou, I still have a half of today's work to do, but now I definitely need some siesta.
@alyx I might give that a try, although my cultural experience may not resonate with it. But sounds already more interesting than many books I've read lately.

@alyx I have similar problems myself. I seem to be an extremely picky reader nowadays. Perhaps one in fifty books I read gives me awe, and the rest are all more or less boring.
That's a terrible waste of time. I'd like to read amazing books, but I don't know how to find them. Almost all the recommendations seem to fail me (mostly friends, in this case), and only randomly picked books seem to have any chance to be awesome.
I've tried hard to find new ways to get recommendations and pick books, with little success.
So I guess it's time to say goedenacht!
@danyork So far the app is quite rudimentary, so we'll have to just wait a bit more still, I guess, to see what it can be. And no source code is published yet, or then I can't just find it. So until the promise of open source is kept, I'm not full-heartedly endorsing it. But even at this point I can see that there are huge possibilities.
@elm how QUEER idea!
@Ashoka Some do, some don't.
Could we all just agree that meeting hate with hate is a bad idea? I understand that speaking out against fascism us important. But talking about killing/smashing/whatever fascists is nearly as bad a being one.
In my opinion the only acceptable time to kill/be violent is in defense of yourself or others.
I should do the dishes, but I guess I'll just read some book first.
Hoi all mastodonians learning #language or #languages or interested in #linguistics! Many of you may use #Duolingo, and no wonder, it is an amazing tool to learn new languages. But alas, it has been deteriorating lately, I've been told, and it may be that Duolingo's business model and proprietariness may hinder its usefulness in the future.
So an open source alternative would be nice.
And today I found #OpenWords (http://openwords.com/). I'm in no way affiliated with it and I don't know about its pros and cons, but looks promising. What's your take on it? Could it be something that could outgrow Duolingo and become THE language learning platform?
@anna Oh that would be an absolutely fantastic outfit!
my friend just showed me this tool, and I am fascinated: https://www.vulgarlang.com I haven't tested it very much, but it looks like an interesting resource for #conlang work
