Nostalgia as an aesthetic motivator, combined with requiring hardier electronics because deep space, could be just the reason for a nice chunky looking aesthetic!

You can actually tell much better in that image that the "shine" on the planets and the ships don't line up than you can in the final animation!

(The backstory for that is to save on rendering time the sky is pre-rendered as an equirectangular projection, and I just shuffled it around enough so that it'd look convincing in motion ^^)

But in that previous toot I was more referring to the way the cases look, with tons of ports and looking older and utilitarian, if that makes sense! (In a way beyond what the current space computers in like the iSS and stuff are at least! More "chunky"!)

Oh there's an idea - The Solar Collective ends up with a lot of AGI sophonts living in their settlements - maybe they could live in big bulky and chunky mainframe-adjacent things in many cases?
