many moons ago i spoke briefly with @ajroach42 about neighborhood sysadmins helping folks use computers and basically that's my goal: become a neighborhood sysadmin, form a league of neighborhood sysadmins, and bypass the difficulty of shitty software by collectively becoming the bridge to usability.
@garbados@ajroach42 That sounds like a great idea ! But I really wonder how to get people interested in stuff. Either they really don't care or they paid just enough attention to computers to notice that big IT companies just want to exploit them and they are suspicious of everything and fear you're trying to sell them something.
@garbados Well I mean the situation is very paradoxical for people I know : they resent not understanding computers but at the same time they look bored each time you try to explain computers to them. I think they believe in magic. They want stuff to work «the way they intend it to» without ever having to explain what that means either to a fellow human or to the computer. To me the hardest part of what you propose isn't to create a place to help people, it's to get people to acknowledge the importance they've given to computers in their everyday lives and to give the corresponding amount of love to their machines.
@Sasha ahh i understand. thanks for clarifying :) computers are pretty magical, going by how confusing they can be 😛
the case i encounter most is when folks require a computer for critical services in an involuntary way, like handling medical or financial or employment things. they understand the need, so they end up asking for help from someone they trust. i want that “someone they trust” to be properly equipped with the time and knowledge to help.
