This morning's ear worm is an uncomposed trio for 2 oboes, bassoon, and basso continuo.

It's a very… how *can* I describe its affekt? Agitated? Restless? Perhaps even anxious?

It's a moderate triple time, but with lots of 16th notes, leaps, and syncopations. So even though the *beat* is just above walking pace, the melodies keep racing ahead impatiently.

Definitely inspired by last night's listen of Zelenka, at any rate.

Quasi metamour referenced ZUN. That name rung a faint bell, but I admitted I'd have to research it to pinpoint the reference.

As an olds, let me say: this is symptomatic of a cultural sea change. It's not the first time I've experienced something like this.

Meanwhile, I've been listening to sonatas by Jan Dismas Zelenka tonight. Quirky but wonderful stuff.

...come to think of it, he's sort of the German Baroque equivalent of William Lawes? Both were modestly successful, held in high esteem by their peers, and wrote music that sometimes went at right angles to musical convention of their day.

Anyway I think I'm done sewing for today.

My breeches now have about 1.4 decent-looking buttonholes in the waistband. Hopefully tomorrow I can finish the remaining 0.6 and attach the buttons.

These things don't really have a fly proper, hence just the two buttons at the waist. The back is tightened by lacing, and the backside is quite loose, so a fly is kind of superfluous.

Unfortunately for me, Europeans had an unhealthy obsession with buttons from c. 1400-1800. That means, for the whole costume, I have roughly 47.6 more buttonholes to sew ∑XD

OK I think I have finally mastered* the secrets to good** hand-sewn buttonholes:

1) Check your work on both sides, especially with thick fabric or layers. Try to be precise with both where the thread goes in *and* where it comes out.

2) Pull snug, but not *tight*. If you pull tight, you end up with a stiff buttonhole whose edges are not as far apart as you intended.

This has been learned through doing a bit, being dissatisfied, and trying again until I'm OK with the results.
