I think most of those connections either don't want it, or already have editors they're working with?

I am planning to go to a LGBTQA+ resource fair tomorrow, with the intent of getting my name in front of some people who might want a little volunteer work.

Is there Craigslist where you are? Last I checked, that's the repository for "people who think all editing/writing is gratis".

It's sort of a cesspool, so be careful, but it's an option if nothing else is coming together
