So in March 1968, the Soviets tested the Zond 4B craft.
It evidently didn't go so well, though it was claimed to be successful.
But a while later, the craft ended up as a public art installation in Beijing.
A friend commented just now:
"The compulsive secrecy and fear of admitting failure adds a very surreal tone to Soviet space history."
