The home timeline: things people you're following are posting and boosting (follow moar folks to see moar posts)
The notifications timeline: things that happens at you (can be filtered to exclude favs and boosts, if so desired)
The federated timeline: ...daym there sure are a lot of instances out there
MORE HOT TIPS
- when you reply on web, you keep the same post privacy and CW as the toot you're replying to. not all mobile clients do the same! be careful! (tootdon is notoriously bad at not copying CWs, I've heard amaroq does though)
- you can turn on and off browser notifications based on the type. hit the icon on the right side at the top of your notifications column
- you can pin local/federated timelines and search timelines (same icon, Pin / Unpin link)
- you can pin toots (multiple toots, too) but currently they only show if people open your profile page (they don't show in web)
- be nice to people
in lieu of writing the blog post I was gonna write last night, here are some RAPID FIRE MASTODON TIPS FOR NEW PEOPLE
- if you have a URL to a user or a toot, you can open it in web by pasting it in the search bar
- use the content warning (CW) feature to prepare others for what you're about to say, especially if it's about politics, current events, triggering subjects, or has nudity / is lewd
- each post can have its own privacy! that's also how you DM people
- in addition to post privacy you can also make it so you approve followers before they can see your private posts
- read user bios before you interact
- I use tootdon on iOS. tusky is good on android

Then I follow them.
Then they boost nice content. I go to see who writes this content and if they are cool, I follow them.
Repeat each week/month, or when you don't have so much activity in your Mastodon and want to see new things :)

Good morning, all! I'm probably going to crash in exhaustion this Sunday lmao. Had to take wife to Planned Parenthood in Springfield on Friday, Sunday took 13 teens to Pride in St. Louis, then had a business conference in Chicago the past two days. Tonight is D&D, tomorrow I'm volunteering immediately after work, then all day Saturday I'm volunteering/running the charity yard sale. WHOO!
