Small Tips for New Folks Afficher plus

DON'T YOU Afficher plus

finally, a website where I am free to express my truest, most authentic self
mastodon.social/media/jTpKi3pg

Also hey folks who are new to mastodon I run an instance and am good at explaining things, AMA about Mastodon.

It's mildly weird seeing so many people I know and follow from Twitter now here, BUT I AM GLAD. AND WELCOMING EVERYONE. HELLO.

hello new people! best tip i can give for mastodon is to follow and interact without fear. poke around the tag to find people with similar interests and go for it (also write up an intro so others can find and follow you!)

i'm a , love (and/or ), have a floofcat that I don't post often enough, have chronic invisible illnesses, am firmly in the swing of season (check out if you also knit!) and read mostly and

@PlanetaryKnight if it helps, you can search for hashtags in the search box. In my case, I’d be likely to search for #knitting or #sff or #yarn or #tea. You might want to search for #gaming or #gameing (it’s a mastodon thing to spell it that way) or any other interests. Also, if you put hashtags for your interests in an introductions post, then you can either click on the resulting hashtags to find other people who use them, or other people looking for those tags will find you.

Welcome new folx! There's plenty of FAQ's out there with info but I noticed a lot of people are joining up at mastodon.social -- this is great! Nothing wrong with that!

But be sure to check out all the other instances too! Some are smaller, some are for different social groups (there are some specifically for artists, programmers, LGBT+ folx, furries, we got a lot of everything!)

Just remember you don't have to stick with one instance and feel free to look around and find one that you like!

Also to explain some concepts (as I see them):

Your HOME TIMELINE - is your toots + your friends toots + whatever they Boost (which is RTs)

Your LOCAL TIMELINE - is all the toots that are on your instance (server!)

Your FEDERATED TIMELINE - is all the toots that are on your federation (clump of instances)

Speaking of resources! the only way mastodon, & every instance of mastodon survives is through our donations!

Servers cost money, development costs time, moderation & admin duties cost time! Twitter makes its money by selling your time, your relationships, your information to advertisers. Mastodon doesn't.

You can support development+uptime for the main instance through patreon.com/mastodon or liberapay.com/Mastodon/

On other instances, please ask your admin how you can support them!

A (brief) Mastodon Tutorial:

Hi! Welcome to Mastodon! Here's some major things you need to know after your #introductions :

Your first instance may not be your permanent instance: Try going to instances.social/ to find the instance that is right for you! I like awoo.space for it's pro-active moderation!

The "CW" button is a content warning. It hides your post behind it. It's considered good behavior to CW politics, NSFW stuff, anything that can be emotionally traumatic, or memes.

Waiting for everyone new to find out about all the instances and how in witches town we get 666 character hexes instead of 500 toots.

First non-retoot post... I feel like this is the first day of school.

Anyway, hi, I'm Vita - your friendly neighborhood super brown nb writer. I write comics primarily, but also prose and other fun things!

I post about writing, art, comics, movies, tv and other media, mental health, being brown, being queer, etc etc etc

I can't spell and this thing doesn't have spellcheck...
