So, turns out even if you're on an instance that blocks all robots, you can often find your own toots on Google because they're also on other instances where they were boosted. Good to know, I guess. Remember Masto public really is public.

If you're ever looking to support your local instance/admin team head over to the 'About This Instance' page. Most of the instances out there are managed on sheer ❤ and don't tend to break even.

hello new people! best tip i can give for mastodon is to follow and interact without fear. poke around the #introductions tag to find people with similar interests and go for it (also write up an intro so others can find and follow you!)

i'm a #librarian, love #gaming (and/or #gameing), have a floofcat that I don't post often enough, have chronic invisible illnesses, am firmly in the swing of #knitting season (check out #MastoKAL2017 if you also knit!) and read mostly #scifi and #fantasy

@PlanetaryKnight if it helps, you can search for hashtags in the search box. In my case, I’d be likely to search for #knitting or #sff or #yarn or #tea. You might want to search for #gaming or #gameing (it’s a mastodon thing to spell it that way) or any other interests. Also, if you put hashtags for your interests in an introductions post, then you can either click on the resulting hashtags to find other people who use them, or other people looking for those tags will find you.

Also to explain some concepts (as I see them):

Your HOME TIMELINE - is your toots + your friends toots + whatever they Boost (which is RTs)

Your LOCAL TIMELINE - is all the toots that are on your instance (server!)

Your FEDERATED TIMELINE - is all the toots that are on your federation (clump of instances)

Speaking of resources! the only way mastodon, & every instance of mastodon survives is through our donations!

Servers cost money, development costs time, moderation & admin duties cost time! Twitter makes its money by selling your time, your relationships, your information to advertisers. Mastodon doesn't.
