Learning with @vesaldi that intimated is a word after we thought it was a typo. And it has nothing to do with intimate. Or intimidate. Why is English like this?

@PlanetaryKnight @vesaldi English is a mess of homophones and synonyms. meeeeega refund. it's.all the word theft.

@firecoals And slang. And stealing words from other languages too.

@PlanetaryKnight @firecoals Frequently more than once! English's best trick for confusing us is developing a loan word, then continuing to use the foreign word as such, then developing ANOTHER loan word from it.

Like how there are like 17 different English words all borrowed from the french "suite".

@firecoals @PlanetaryKnight ngl I read this as "English is just a mess of hormones" and I was like yes yes this seems legit

Or it's like. TECHNICALLY a secondary/tertiary meaning of intimate but not one we usually use. And intimated is used more in the past tense verb sense. THIS IS ALL WEIRD.

@PlanetaryKnight I'm a linguistics hobbyist, and the more I learn about English the less I understand it.

@LottieVixen @lizardsquid
I just always thought it meant like close/personal/sometimes romantic/among close friends. But apparently it also means to make aware/known/hint at.

@PlanetaryKnight @vesaldi Haha awesome. I know Jack through Dorian K on Twitter.

@alice lmao I know Jack because I followed him on Twitter and then he complained about something very specific to my employer and I realized we worked at the same place. (Just different offices.)

@alice It has been fun and now he work-IM's me things where he thinks there are typos and we both laugh about it before realizing we're just completely ignorant and there's another word, apparently.
