Back when I was active on Usenet it was considered pretty normal to have house rules for any newsgroup, you were also expected to refrain from posting long enough to notice and learn the unspoken customs (this was called "lurking").

Nowadays people see it as an orchestrated attack against free speech, shout references to 1984, and threaten to move elsewhere.

Yet the ones asking us all to behave politely are called "hypersensitive"?

do the people complaining about mastodon admins being able to view your private messages realize that
twitter can do that too and they're literally partnered with a service named "dataminr"

Guys, can I just borrow a little over 6 minutes of your time?
You'll be one of the lucky 10000 today (xkcd reference) and we'll all become a little better for it.

Please take 6minutes and watch this video: youtube.com/watch?v=rE3j_RHkqJ

mastodon is a twitter clone in the same way that the car is just a horse-drawn carriage that doesn't need a horse

mastodon: we ban nazis

twitter audience: truly a horrifying dystopia

Mastodon: *paints beautiful wall mural*

Twitter: Who's gonna buy that? You can't even transport it?

Mastodon: *does an elaborate interpretive dance in front of the mural*

Twitter: Wait, is that part of the art?

Mastodon: *group meditation chanting "awooo"*

Twitter: Ok but how do you monetize?

Mastodon: *stretch*

Twitter: ...?

Mastodon: *a thousand voices sing a hymn to diversity as a million weirdos dance*

Twitter: We're, uh... we're going home now...

Mastodon: *builds space ship*

why am I being followed by a followbot on my own instance

what purpose does this possibly serve

people are posting about language again. consider these idle thoughts:

1) mandating english is rooted in a history of imperialism and continuing that just because you don't understand a thing is lowkey pretty gross
2) maybe not everything on this site is for you. we can be kinder to each other than that
3) many of the people speaking french are silenced in their real lives as marginalized people in a stifling society. let people be free to talk however (excluding harmful impact/bigotry, obv)

= MASTODON =
WHAT THEY EXPECTED: a VC backed startup intending to destroy twitter
WHAT THEY GOT: a bunch of cyberpunk kids hanging out behind the mall

follow bots suck because:
1. they follow everyone, which means your users get zero choice who to federate with at all
2. they follow everyone, which means if people want private toots to not be seen by everyone running a follow bot they have to block all of them
3. they follow everyone, even private accounts, and they have no memory of who they previously tried to follow, meaning they'll follow people over and over and over

4. they remind me of those birdsite BUY FREE FOLLOWERS spambots

I'm going to Patreon HQ right now to talk to the execs. Since a lot of you are users, I wanna know: Any burning questions that I should make sure to ask them?

When in doubt, CW.

If someone asks you, CW.

If you hesitate at all, CW.

It's one click. And it helps keep this amazing journey we're all on amazing for all of us.

americans complaining about toots being in french: stop

I think what I like about this instance is nobody saw witches.town on that public instance list and said "i guess." i assume everyone, like me, read it and chanted "witches town. witch town. WITCH TOWN WITCH TOWN WITCH TOWN" [bangs rhythmically on desk]
