I was gone for like three hours and I missed something very important involving lulus apparently but now I'm too far gone to find out what it all means

She takes a drag from her cigarette, flicks the butt onto the scorched earth, and stuffs her hands into her jeans before she responds with slow words. "Some of them," she tips her head, hands in her pockets now too busy to point, "tried do-as-say." She spits. "Me, I'm more a do-as-I-do. So I left 'em to their own devices. (Her hands shook when she handed him the worn leather diary. "Everything you want to know is in there.")

The edges were worn, more so on the bottom where her thumbs had pulled back the cover a hundred times. Slowly, he opened it, and the spine shifted with his fingers as he moved, softened from use. He turned to the first page.

When he looked down, it was empty.

When he looked up, she was gone.
