Persona 5 especially makes me feel like the personality free, near silent, player insert MCs are a nuisance the series has to work around.
Scenes where the other characters are interacting with one another are way better than the half-conversations where one character just dumps their backstory and personality onto you
Also romances would be a lot more interesting if there were actually two people involved in them.
Make it like Fire Emblem (player chooses who romances who) and let each character have access.to all the Personae of their Arcana.
@Noelle808 Do you have a similar problem with, e.g. the Dragon Age series (if you've played it)? I agree that the Persona 5 protagonist makes scenes worse but don't feel it's the fault of player-custom PCs so much as how little involvement and dialogue options you get in that specific series.
@ashlily My issue is slightly different with bioware-style RPGs.
Instead of a single blank slate protagonist that the narrative happens around, those games have a few different personalities written for the protagonist and every scene in the story has to be written loosely enough to accommodate each of them.
@Noelle808 Main characters with actual personalities are inherently more relateable anyways
