Introductions, why not! I'm Christopher Allan Webber, co-editor of the ActivityPub specification (which Mastodon is about to move to as its main federation spec), co-maintainer of GNU MediaGoblin and GNU 8sync, and a hacker on some other GNU software (particularly Guile, Guix) I used to be tech lead at Creative Commons before I went crazy trying to advance decentralized social networks. Main site: dustycloud.org/

I post a lot about ActivityPub, obscure CS/lisp history, leftie politics

NerdResa partagé

Btw for those who don't know, @rhiaro is responsible for a lot of the clarity in the structure of ActivityPub. She's the reason the document is so nicely split between client to server and server to server... prior to that it was all one spec where you had to implement both.

She also just passed her PhD yesterday! Her thesis is cool and relevant: "The Presentation of Self
on a Decentralised Web" rhiaro.github.io/thesis/

Let's all give her a round of applause!

unpopular opinion: I know all the reasons why Excel sucks, but it's still (without VBA!) severely underrated as a programming language for "non-programmers"

also, index(match()) > vlookup()

@eribloodlust also should mention that ablism is a part of this. the thing about the american dream is there is an assumption that everyone has the same starting point and will succeed if they have the work ethic. european tech community seems to have a similar vibe.

i told some men, "i have a hard time to find work in tech, because discrimination against women in that field."

one actually replied "i dont think its discrimination. at my work, there are no women, so there isnt discrimination"

NerdResa partagé

even in europe, tech has an "american dream" problem. even leftist technologists have a "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" rhetoric and are ignorant to access to resources, intersectional oppression, and most importantly: the cost of time that it takes to do unpaid self study, when someone is already poor. i see this mostly in the advice people give.

FOLLOW FRIDAY! TODAY, you should follow

- the road wherever it leads you. don't think, just let it take you away
- the wind. it might blow you off to a new place where you can plant your roots and grow. or it might bring you back to a place you once called home
- dogs! they're cute and have fuzzy butts and they know more than they let on
- paintings of people looking or pointing somewhere specific. in movies they usually lead to a secret passageway or something, and those can be cool and fun

If anyone knows of a person with access to a Linux or BSD box physically in Azerbaijan, or with an exit point in Azerbaijan, please let us know. We need to map out how AZ government is blocking our website so that we can take appropriate measures.

Thank you!

@cnc it would be really nice if mastodon supported arbitrary (within reason) length image descriptions

@bea @chr @ccolocho I have exactly one good thing to say about academic publishing: openaccess is gaining momentum.

Pressure your conference chair/journal editor into moving to openaccess.
Refuse “gold” openaccess, it's a scam designed to get publishers even more money...
If that's what it takes, boycott closed-access conferences and journals.

If people are motivated to help organizing the Decentralized Internet devroom at FOSDEM, ping
@taziden, @nitot or me.

For the details, FOSDEM:
- is the biggest European FOSS dev meeting (so: technical subjects)
- 3/4 February at Brussels
- a devroom is a thematics room
- we did that last year archive.fosdem.org/2017/schedu
- the work is centered around organization, planification, communication, writting stuff
- decentralizing internet is like /important/ 😋

Still, standing in a corner of the internet. In a string of infinite dimensions, corners are everywhere.

Walking in the ambient noise, I started hearing sounds, like a beacon in the night. The sounds lazily weaved together and there, maybe, music and words.

In a corner of the internet, another corner of the internet, I pause and listen to the melody.

The Adorkable Misogyny of The Big Bang Theory youtu.be/X3-hOigoxHs from #YouTube

"The Big Bang Theory provides a perfect lens through which to deconstruct a popular media trope I like to call the Adorkable Misogynist. Adorkable Misogynists are male characters whose geeky version of masculinity is framed as comically pathetic yet still endearing. Their status as nerdy “nice guys” then lets them off the hook for a wide range of creepy, entitled, and sexist behaviors."

One of the many reasons I hate that fucking show.

- We never use Twitter's logo in branding or illustrations. Fluffy elephant sitting on the bird is a photoshop in bad taste. We are competing with centralization, not one single specific company
- For that matter, I would never use graphics that are that low res

I also really don't use Twitter that much. I actually see 0 reason to use a Twitter account for Mastodon. However, there is one "official" one, and it is: twitter.com/MastodonProject

NerdResa partagé

Someone brought to my attention that there is a Twitter account impersonating the Mastodon project. This is a fake account: twitter.com/MastodonTM

- We don't do the business of selling blue or green checkmarks
- We don't have "office hours"
- We don't collect donations on behalf of disasters (unless you consider me a disaster)
- I would know how to spell Houston for god's sake

🇬🇧 I'm still searching for radio amateurs on mastodon, by the way.

Please retoot!

Of course, from a capitalist POV, this is really beneficial.
But as anti-capitalists, maybe we should reflect on how FOSS has been a kind of free lunch for capitalism and silicon valley especially.
I feel FOSS has become a common, shared, constant capital that everyone can benefit from. However, capital makes a very big difference in how you can leverage such shared thing.

Is it time to build anti-capitalist FOSS? Something that capitalists couldn't benefit from?
