What bothers me about the misogynistic googler screed is the reactions of people that seem to think it isn't wholly bad. That this idea of 'idealogical diversity' is worthy of further study.

Because in context of the screed it is the paradox of tolerance repackaged. A plea for the tolerant to tolerate intolerance. tx0.org/eb

I should probably add: I'm in Berlin so I need a router for the Berlin Freifunk OS (Kathleen)

NerdResa partagé

Any suggestion for a router to use for #Freifunk? I heard TP-Link doesn't support flashing a new OS anymore, so TP-Link is out.

Really happy with that navigation app that I found as an alternative to Google :

MAPS.ME, see maps.me/en/home

It is based on data, but has a much better user experience than the other app that I tried.
It works with offline maps, so I don't use up so much mobile data on my trip. And it navigated me really well today, on foot, twice.
So, yay for alternative to the evil data gatherer! :)

There's an anthology of Speculative Fiction stories by trans authors coming out next month and I'm on it, alongside 24 other amazing authors!!

It's called Meanwhile, Elsewhere and you can pre-order it now.

Both Twitter and Facebook can put quite a heavy load on old hardware in their standard web interfaces. One easy solution I found:

Both have less resource-hungry mobile web versions ( m.facebook.com/ and m.twitter.com/ ).

Depending on your browser, you might not actually get shown the _least_ resource-hungry version though. You need to send an obscure or nonsense user agent string, et voila, you get Facebook and Twitter web interfaces without JavaScript and much multimedia.

"People trying to comment on articles will now be forced to prove they understand what it's about.

That's at least at Norwegian broadcaster NRK's website, which will present people who want to leave comments with a quiz that asks them about what the story is actually about."

This is pure genius.

Kenya had an election today. There were serious, grounded concerns about related violence. So far, not only has this not happened, but polling stations seem to have been run better than in much of the US.
Of course, most non-Kenyan media won't bother reporting this unless it changes for the worse, so here: enjoy the mundanity of an election running smoothly enough to not make world news

google is peak performative allyship: they systematically discriminate against poc, women, disabled, and old people to the point where they are enabling many types of violence, from wealth inequality, to destruction of communities, to sexual violence... yet outwardly they claim to support diversity, and will proudly and publicly fire low rung white men who hurt that image while doing nothing about structural oppression.

A very true and thoughtful article by an ex-Googler (senior dev) about how social skills, empathy and understanding are absolutely vital to software engineering, and only the most junior devs can get away with solitary work in their little cave without outside interaction or thoughts about other people.

(And on how that internal Google document was not only wrong but horribly harmuful.)

One aspect of this article that I think is lacking:

'How might Airbnb increase rents? Primarily by taking units off the market.'

I think yes and no. It's true units going off of the market are reducing supply and justifying increase in cost. But I think what is much more insidious is that a landlord can make more money with AirBnB, and that's what really drives up the cost of all units: that there is a more profitable alternative use, so locals have to compete with prices that tourists will pay.

New Study Shows Link Between Proliferation of AirBNB and Increase in Cost of Rent

citylab.com/equity/2017/08/whe

'The new study, which has not yet been peer reviewed, is the first to analyze the impact of Airbnb listings by ZIP code in 100 of the largest metro areas.'

'The number of Airbnb listings in some central Brooklyn neighborhoods grew by a whopping 41 percent, on average, every year from 2012 to 2016.

During that same period, rents in these neighborhoods grew about 7.7 percent a year from a baseline average of $1,712 per month in 2012—that’s an estimated average increase of $131 every year.'

Because I EVALUATED those ideas before I rejected them.

I don't need to re-evaluate them every time they're presented -- they're vile and abhorrent.

It's useful to know which way the wind blows because the wind is unavoidable -- but using the wind as a gauge of which way to lean, when protofascist groups are trying to form up and hijack the government, isn't something I would be okay with.

So I don't need a stream of "YOU'RE WHY TRUMP WON WITH YOUR 'LET'S NOT BE SHIT' IDEAS" in my life.

NerdResa partagé

Every now and then I find someone's writing -- article, comment, post, whatever -- and I just say to myself

"Wow! This is someone I should block on every available outlet to help insulate myself from shitheads like this."

Now, TECHNICALLY I have to hear/read what they're saying in order to grasp it, so one cannot really claim I'm just "rejecting" their ideas.

I rejected their ideas a LONG time before I ever saw them. I'm rejecting CONNECTION with THEM.

And that's not a bad practice, IMO.
