I also pitched a spatial analysis about Google Maps new 'Area of Interest' feature. Google claims their algorithm analyses the most active areas based on the density of bars, restaurants, and shops... and yet in Berlin, San Francisco, and LA... dense minority districts are not highlighted while white or gentrifying districts are. I wanted to figure out a way to analyse if Google is disproportionately highlighting white districts, while not highlighting equally dense, active, and interesting minority districts. Some people were really interested in the idea so now we are doing this analysis. It's the only critical project here.
#HackYourCityBerlin I'm glad that there's a whole table of people around me talking about the shortcomings of public open data in Germany, explaining the govt justifications and venting about how hard it makes it for activists.

These maps show a Google designated 'area of interest' in Neukölln. We wanted to show that the 'area of interest' does not actually represent the most dense or active part of a neighbourhood, but rather a subjective selection of a more class privileged and less minority owned area. Nothing makes me more upset than thinking about how 30$ android devices never get security updates tbh. Telling people just get a nexus if they want timely software is a fucking scam.
That classist rhetoric that only those with money deserve security updates and privacy features is bullshit. Tech might be equalizing access but it's stealing rights from the poor. Fuck new high end phones I want amazing 100$ phones.
