"Reviewer bias in single- versus double-blind peer review"
http://www.pnas.org/content/early/2017/11/13/1707323114.short
spoilerssss: " ... single-blind reviewers are significantly more likely than their double-blind counterparts to recommend for acceptance papers from famous authors, top universities, and top companies. The estimated odds multipliers are tangible, at 1.63, 1.58, and 2.10, respectively."

Folks,
I know Twitter's a shithole but remember that it's not JUST the admins' fault.
Fleeing from the constant negativity, vicious flame-wars and harassment? Those things are just as likely to happen here, if we're not careful.
Mastodon is not popular yet, but it's growing. One day it will be. Security by obscurity is not security at all, as I'm sure you're aware.
We need to be on our best behaviour, promoting the values we want to see on our networks.
It's not someone else's problem.

actually the thing about mastodon that keeps hitting me is that it's a return to the governance model of the internet of the 90s, which is the "local dictator", with a single admin or a small mod team who are the sole owners and operators of a site. and like, oh right, anybody who's only used, say, twitter and facebook and youtube and tumblr and myspace and so forth and so on would have had absolutely no exposure to, because all major social media platforms online for the past ten years or so have been huge corporate monoliths (or wannabe huge corporate monoliths). getting mad at brad on livejournal was a very different thing than getting mad at jack on twitter or david karp on tumblr, because lj was brad's site in a way that was very different from jack being CEO of twitter
The report I'm doing on my survey on sexual harassment in indie rpgs, larps, and spaces is a rough one.

Survey ends tomorrow and I've just got a LOT of stuff to look at. It's gonna be huge. Might break it down. Please respond if you can and share in any case!

⚠️ Mastodon is not anti-Nazi, or anti-harassment. (Not even Mastodon.Social is very anti-harassment.) Anyone can run an instance, including Nazis. Including abusers. Including techbros who don't give a shit.
This is why your choice of instance matters. Know who your admin is. Check your blocklist. Check the code of conduct.
Not everyone cares about your safety, and no one is really required to.
Be kind. Be careful. Punch Nazis.

If you just have one account on one instance, you may not realize that Mastodon federation -- the means by which toots are sent from instance to instance -- is not instantaneous.
It may be seconds or minutes for a toot to traverse even directly connected instances. This depends on server load and how many messages are in the queue.
Toot lag. It's a thing.
The more you know! 💫

- "toot" invented by @Hbomberguy
- the boop notification sound composed by @jk
- all the elephants drawn by @dopatwo
- except one which was drawn by @cutewitchirl
I know I just made this account afew days ago but I'm really fucking scared and desperate for a place to stay while I look for a job. I'm currently in Virginia but I can try to get most places in the US. Even if you can't directly help, please signal boost this.

Devs and admins are people too! Let them hear your thoughts, but be kind!
I guess the thing that worries me here is that as consumers we're used to complaining to management as our only way of getting things fixed.
But mastodon is a community effort, built and administered by people who care, so just criticizing stuff in a huffy mood just makes you seem entitled and unwilling to help.
Does anyone have a recommendation for a #SIP provider?
$Work needs SIP to replace a T1 that AT&T decided to disconnect so they could wake me up in the middle of the night far too often these past two weeks. There will be some trick questions; international calls are the tip of the trouble iceberg, followed by DTMF issues. Good customer support is my top priority. (I'm pretty sure any SIP is cheaper than a T1, so cost is already a win.)
