one of the biggest "go screw" messages we could ever deliver to rampant venture capitalism is to slowly but surely move towards owning only things we can rebuild and repair nigh indefinitely at low cost of ownership over lifetime.

@Icarus I don't think that's a good justification and I'm not convinced there can be a valid excuse for this behavior. Even if it isn't directed at me, it gives me the impression of "This is how we communicate here" and thus "This would happen to me, too".

I haven't heard about other devs yet, just that the culture is toxic, which sounds pretty on point so far, sadly.
Counterexamples are very much appreciated though.

@kurtm @phessler
Reading this again, I have some questions:
1. What's the benefit in having a unified system? Assuming this means it's all developed by the same people, I thought diversity was better?
2. How does OpenBSD approach new features, e.g. in networking?
3. Do OpenBSD devs participate in standardization, e.g. in the IETF?

Would be awesome to get some input on that. Thanks! :)

@Icarus I'd prefer a culture where people are not insulted when they're trying to contribute (or otherwise). You can say "Sorry, not good enough, here's our guidelines" without being mean.
Also a good way of having discussion and dealing with conflict (productive, not destructive) would be nice.

There are two really worrying trends right now in regards to internet accessibility. Web page bloat and the sneaking acceptability of horrible ISP practices with mobile providers. They both stem from the assumption that everyone has access to some form of broadband internet at home. The reality is that for a huge portion the world, the only portal they have to this space is a cheap smartphone. They are not really luxuries but the most economic form of internet access available.

@sina Sorry if not helpful, but there's a Mastodon developer and admin Discord channel which you can get access to e.g. by donating to the project. patreon.com/mastodon

net neutrality will never truly be possible while network infrastructure can be privately owned and corporations like facebook and google broker many people's entire internet experience. we need to socialize the internet.

@stsp please keep in mind that some of those shops are not profit oriented and they donate money to free software projects e.g. tehnoetic.com/tehnoetic-donati or invest funds to deliver novel products olimex.com/Products/DIY-Laptop

If you think they overcharge than try to install Libreboot on your refurbished laptop/smartphone; then count work hours and make it cheaper.

[Sarcastic] Geez shop.fsf.org/books/gnu-emacs-m they overcharge for Emacs manual! They are more evil than big corpo not paying for OpenSSL dev-t.

Due to the open source firmware for USB atheros wifi devices, I am learning some interesting facts about "free-as-in-libre" hardware shops out there.

Friends of free software don't overcharge users of free software!

@mpts I see :) I might give it a try at some point. Thanks for the input! @phryk

@steelman I see :) Thanks for the advice.

@gracie But anyway, yea, focusing on user space instead was also an idea I had. There's lots of interesting stuff there too and as far as I've seen, the culture is less shitty, though still very male-dominated.

@gracie Argh, TCP needs to change but not IP of course ^^;

@gracie I was actually talking about the kernel here though :)
Like implementations of protocols such as TCP and IP, which need to be changed for e.g. MPTCP to work, as far as I know. Also, implementing an alternative to the Socket API without building on top of BSD sockets is probably tough… isn't it? (I'd love it if you proved me wrong here :) )

@kurtm @phessler I recognize this is at most half-serious, but what metrics are you applying? :)

@Nihl I see :) Thanks for the advice!

@Nihl What's the difference between the two, more technological or more cultural?

@phessler I see.

Recently I've heard that Linux (the project) is also not that welcoming towards new features, like MPTCP becoming part of the mainline kernel.
Can you confirm that?
