I'm off to learn more bash! I can get Lynda.com classes online for free through my public library. Check your library out, you might be able to, too. It looks like they have some easy classes for people new to Linux and/or who are new to programming and the command line. The Free Software Foundation's 'Intro to Linux' class on edX is good, but I got lost at at bash scripting as they assume you already know some programing and I don't (yet!)

You don't need to know the command line to use Linux but it helps you do cool stuff. It's like learning magic.
I just finished Joe Collin's BASH Basics. It's good for people new to Linux and who don't have much beyond basic computer skills (you aren't a programmer.)

He dropped a new Bash tutorial a couple of days ago.

And put up his scripts on his website for anyone to download.

@WelshPixie @nico Sounds a lot like Repair Cafés (https://repaircafe.org/en/), which are popular in Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and elsewhere, I believe.
So discussing poverty and putting off fixing household things with a few people because you can't afford it, and @nico suggested setting up something where people who have the ability can do repairs and maintenance and stuff for those who can't otherwise afford it. Use the hashtag #fixmystuff if you have services you can offer - tools, knowledge, skill - or if you have something you need fixed. Don't forget to mention your general worldly location too! ^.^
hey #FixMyStuff
area: brentwood, california, usa
skills: caulking, wall mounting, bicycle repair, some guitar and other instrument repair, cutting/dying hair (like dont ask me nothin fancy tho), and just kinda like… any low-skill random biz with a screwdriver… just dont ask me to solder nothin

@nire here in Germany, they check everyone's ticket
but guess who gets away with not having a ticket without having cops called on them? people with money, who speak German.
so i got me a Ticket2000, which allows me to bring someone after 19:00, and on weekends.
so, in those times i intervene and say, this is a friend of mine, they travelling on my ticket. and, outside of those times, I just offer my friend help with translation, and, well, money.
remember that if you are on public transit when a fare inspector comes on and you can risk police interaction, a simple "hey, why aren't you checking mine" can waste their time at worst (so they can do less in a day) but has the chance, esp if the rest of the bus joins you, which you can often cause to happen if you talk about them wasting your collective time for targeting people who are marginalized
hackers.town is open for registrations again. have at it.
Hey people in USA
In december FCC plans another vote to end net neutrality. If you can, call your senator, and make sure they're aware that nobody wants to kill net neutrality besides cable companies. Let the people, not the highest bidder decide. Do what you can
Hey y'all, @justkelly_ok is now on Mastodon! You may know her from birdsite, where she is very funny and has proven her µblogging chops.
Follow her for feminism and nerdy software stuff, and please make her intro to this platform nice and easy!
@floi @bram A good friend of mine wrote this tool called servefile for transferring files more easily, mostly on a local network: https://www.unix.com/man-page/debian/1/servefile/
It's nice because you can just give people a link and have them download the file using their browser, which is a familiar thing.
But also, this xkcd comic applies: https://xkcd.com/949/
every time we touch, I create an empty file
