Challenge! Am I the only one on Mastodon that uses crystallography? Are there more then two chemists? Can anyone help me find them if they exist?

I want to build great work. I want to build projects that people respond to and want to be a part of.

That means committing to my own self care so I am able to build and create to the best of my ability. And so I can keep creating in the future.

It's been a hard road discovering this truth, but a very valuable one.

The desire to make good work includes committing to taking care of yourself.

It's funny how that works.

The thing about having ideas and the means to push them forward is that you always feel like you should be working, which, as I am learning, is both a blessing and curse.

It's great to have enthusiasm for what you're working on, but taking care of yourself has to be a priority as well.

Take breaks, eat well, get plenty of sleep, let the sunshine hit your face, stay up on your meds, etc.

Being committed to an idea for the long haul also means committing to being able to work effectively.

@phessler Oh no, I relate :(
Hope you'll get better soon.

(Or, as a consolation prize, any decent research *on anything* that includes NBs?

Does anyone know of decent research on the gendered pay gap that includes *nonbinary* genders?

How to get people to join Mastodon

A guide by... er, me

- Show them a screenshot of your favourite open instance.
- Tell them it works well in browser on mobile.
- Tell them the admins are good people who ban nazis.
- Invite them to join your favourite open instance.
- DO NOT use the words federated, instance, or free and open source.

After they've joined, send them here:

- Cross-poster: crossposter.masto.donte.com.br
- Find your Twitter friends: bridge.joinmastodon.org/

And on that note, does anyone have codes of conduct or anti-harassment policies they particularly like? We'll be doing our own thing, but input (particularly regarding what you've found works well or poorly) would be much appreciated!

(Boost if you like, I suppose? More input is good.)

Hi everyone, since the same issues come up again and again and are keeping people from using this site, I started a wiki page on Mastodon #accessibility stuff!

Please go and improve it, and share it with anyone who might need it!

en.mstdn.wiki/Accessibility

It is supposed to help use Mastodon right now, by explaining useful features that Mastodon already has and showing workarounds for features it lacks. It's not meant to imply that improvements to Mastodon itself can't or shouldn't be made :thumbsup_paw:

if you sometimes use a shell, know you can search in your history with ctr-r

ctrl-r ssh will get you the last ssh command, ctrl-r again to get the one before

also ctrl-a and ctrl-e for the start/end of line
ctrl-z puts a process in the background (see bg and fg)
ctrl-l redraws stuff (if a ncurses on ssh thing is broken, try it)

I use it infrequently, but when I do, it reminds me that the *relationship* is fraught. It reminds me of my part in it and what I have to do if I choose to peek past the filter.

It also leaves the structure of discussion much more intact, which I think is much healthier for the community and for the participants on either side of the filter.

Unlike muting, *something* would still show up. So, it looked a lot more like a content warning. But it was a content warning that the *reader* controls, but keyed on the nature of the poster.

Later incarnations changed the name to just "{filtered}". This recasting was a key development for me. It changes the focus from judgmentalism, sanction, or punishment into an act of self care and empowerment.

The first thing started out with not so nice framing. It was, I think, inspired by an even earlier thing known as "the killfile" from usenet and so I think shares conceptual space, if not direct kinship, to Mastodon's mute function. It was called the "bozo filter" and would essentially hide to the list's maintainer any post made by any account on the list.

There are some things I've been thinking about from my decades of experience in other online communities ('social media' avant le lettre). Things I think could be implemented for Mastodon.

NerdResa partagé

It's like Puritans exercising seeking their freedom to put people in the stocks for adultery: Not a good look.

I'm increasingly distressed by the tendency towards engineering into Mastodon methods of controlling accounts, fairly transparently as a mechanism of trying to control the people behind the accounts.

The beauty of federation to me is in the ways it *empowers* people to make the choices that are right for them. While those choices can include ways of punishing, shaming, ostracizing and excluding others, it's a shame to prioritize and focus on those.
