@amphetamine I was assuming people would do that in their own network or with the consent of those involved :o
But you're right, this kind of thing should be said explicitly.
@Sistason @natanji Oh, another thing I wanted to mention: As this Layer 2 device is able to filter traffic on Layer 4 (UDP), your solution involves a clear violation of the layering principle. Maybe that's why it wasn't that obvious. But in this case, the violation works in our favor, so… *shrugs* :p
@NerdResa not sure if you're aware of them, but there are a few pcap archives around.
If you've never made a packet capture trace before, here's how you can get started using Wireshark: https://www.howtogeek.com/104278/how-to-use-wireshark-to-capture-filter-and-inspect-packets/
If you prefer video instructions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ov3BRzGziCw
Idea for a new hobby:
Collecting network packet capture (pcap) traces from interesting/"fun" network environments. :3
In the same way other people collect stamps or whatever.
"Look at this weird setup with multiple DHCP servers!"
"I've got one where the timings are totally off!"
... you could also trade them if you're comfortable. :D
@natanji
You could configure one DHCP server to only give devices with a specific MAC address an IP address, so the clients on the other side can't use it. But then guests can't either...
So I guess the networks have to be separated somehow.
Maybe have a separate SSID for guests?
(because the last one was private)

Anybody have a recommendation for a free (ideally FOSS), cross-platform program that can forward USB devices over the network? Something you tried and which is actually working? I'd like to plug my USB scanner into my home Linux server and use it on my Windows 10 desktop.
i feel like i cant and wont use masto today, because theres so much neglect for cws regarding a super heavy topic, that its not comfortable for me. im not the only one. we use this platform because these tools are available. i know for me, having the option to only open these posts if i can handle it is something that would make me able to use masto right now...

(Briefly thought about following some of my friends into studying #art professionally, but decided I lacked both consistent #style and #bullshitting ability necessary for that.
So instead I got into #programming, mostly in #python. I love coding weird stuff, like #procgen #zines or #bots that tell people how #queer a thing is and my hard disk is littered with projects that went nowhere.
(Like I still have a couple gigs of GG tweets I wanted to analyze using #SocialNetworkAnalysis.)
I don't know if I ever did an #introduction post on here, so here's one:
Hi, I'm Minx and I'm a #queer #bisexual #dad. I have #depression and #anxiety-issues, which tends to make me less-than-social and low #spoons. (But I started working on those, so yay!)
People describe me as #reallychill but I'm actually #screaminginside. 😆
I love #notebooks, #fountainpens, #dippens and pretty much anything to do with #paper. (#BOOKS!!!
)
There are still traces of #art schooling in me, I guess.

1. Pretty aware, since I'm reminded every time I read somebody's handle with their instance in it.
2. Decentralized moderation has its advantages, but also its downsides. I find it annoying when fights between admins become fights "between instances" and then one instance is blocked by another just because one individual said something bad. Mostly a social problem though.
3. They are less likely to be capitalist data gatherers.
