@NerdResa They seem to be reasonablt open on the network R&D thing, so perhaps the standard will be open?
Still very ungood, though, given that all their open network stuff is unuseable at any smaller scale than “I'm Facebook”.
Also, there is a pretty large community of citizen-owned and -operated mesh networks. (Disclaimer: I am involved in one.)
If they were interested in bringing fast network to people (rather than owning it) I would expect to see them on that scene...
