Two children have just completed a task. Both are praised for completing it.

Child 1 hears: "You're so smart, good job!"

Child 2 hears: "You did such good work, good job!"

They feel roughly the same, but there's a substantial difference. Consider the implications:

Child 1 hears: "You have an innate ability that allowed you to complete this task."

Child 2 hears: "You did a lot of work that allowed you to complete this task."

Now do you see the difference?

Sadly at this point I feel like anyone who's building an open, decentralized alternative to a popular service (eg YouTube) needs to add a disclaimer that explicitly states "Also we understand the Paradox of Tolerance and will not allow this to become another platform for hate speech".

hey darlings! a friend of mine just recently told me she has schizophrenia and hallucinations with varying severity. she's not on meds or in therapy bc of bad experiences and i would like to help and support her as best i can. i have a basic understanding of her conditions but beyond offering help, being physically present, and checking in and sending affirmations, do any of you have advice on how to best support her? thank you in advance!
