Interesting parallel between (a) alt-right trolls who think "free speech" means freedom to crush and poison communities and rob them of better, richer conversations (2) laissez-faire free market types who think economic "freedom" means a world where most of us are employed by companies capable of limiting our freedom in so many ways.

Both embrace "freedom" as an abstract principle but destroy it in practice.

If you see someone being harassed on here, in any way at all on any level on any scale, call that shit out. Don't sit there and think 'hey that's not cool' then keep scrolling. Type those thoughts out, hit send. Let harassers know that kind of behaviour isn't tolerated and let the people being harassed know they're not drowning in a void while everybody looks the other way.

in my experience 9 times outta 10 when a guy says "I was joking / being sarcastic / being ironic / etc" after being called out for being a jerk he's just covering his ass.

To dig into "real": a concept must have​ not just intellectual gravity but emotional reality to you. "Integrative complexity" smarty pants guy in that video almost certainly only means the former, which is why he can maybe say eg "I've thought about rape jokes intellectually and come to the conclusion they're fine". Versus, y'know, all the things a survivor feels and experiences and has to live with every moment of their existence. Grasping emotional reality is harder work.

So much hurtful speech online happens when someone says, "This isn't real to me, and I find it amusing", and then digs in when others push back saying it *is* real to them.
So I dunno, if you find yourself arguing with an asshole for being gross, maybe it's useful to focus on how real it isn't to them? Offering this just in case it's helpful.

The phrase I come back to is, "it's not real enough for you yet". If you joke about rape but you + anyone close to you have never been affected by it, it's not real to you. Maybe you'll go your whole life without it becoming real to you, maybe you won't. Until then, assume it is very real to others.
