@tbreisacher Can you point me to something where they say it's fine? I asked my supervisor and he just said "APA says no" and I wasn't really in a position to argue. But I would still like to point him to that.

@tbreisacher Thank you! This seems to state rather clearly, that striving towards inclusive language is wanted. And at the beginning that not just psychologists should follow the guidelines.
