Hardcore punk artists were very familiar to the dishonest presentation of punk music in media, and rather than push against it in an overtly political way, they drifted into more insular territory, small venues, largely abandoning association with regular punk. they're hardcore. And through this, the spirit of punk that post-punk had tapped into to create more interesting music, was instead being developed further in more brutally honest expressions of emotion. Which these expression in hardcore led to the creation of emo, which is the same thing as hardcore etymologically, but even more personal and cathartic.

Post-punk was by and large a reaction to the artistic aspects of punk music. To post-punk musicians, punk had the spirit, but also terribly formulaic, simple, and repetitive music of low quality. Through this motivation, bands experimented with sound more, took the punk ideology and brought it into an expansive range of expression. This is also where many huge subgenres came from, such as synth punk, gothic rock, jangle pop, no wave, and many others. This change effectively undermined the popularity of regular punk music and brought in a new period of "hey, I guess punk music doesn't have to sound unsophisticated or uncreative"

Argh I wanna add an addendum to the shit I said about anarchopunk being the only authentic punk genre. Anarchopunk practices what it preaches, and typical punk bands of the time (before the dramatic shift happened) were hypocritical largely, which is one reason why the shift happened. The SHIFT i am speaking of, is many-pronged. Which I will explain each in detail. The establishment of the post-punk wave of music, hardcore punk, anarcho spirited punks retaliation, and the formation of pop punk as a subcultural identity. Essentially the hypocrisy of 70s punk and those inspired by it led to an upheaval, bringing more honest punk music.

@cooler_ranch I feel the same about most SNL alum films. I liked them when I didn't have my taste built up yet, and then rewatching them as an overly critical teen, i realized its just not my thing

I've already resigned to accept that my radical and open online persona will cut me out of a lot of options and lead to unforeseen consequences relating to my career or way people view me. But I wonder how much of a change it would be if I was more reserved and respectable. I think I'd come across the same amount of opportunities, but more with people I would rather not work with anyway. And I would probably feel worse for not having agency in things I say or post or do. For the longest time I wanted to be super private and secretive and i've basically given that up entirely. It doesn't feel right to lie about myself to people interested in what I do.

Castlevania X's music was so good but fighting the speedo-clad Dracula in it was extremely difficult and I still reflect on how absolutely unfair that fight was, and how I had to abuse save states to win.

hip hop is clearly the new punk, but what does that make jpegmafia? He comes off as the Feederz of hip hop. Radical and raw but catchy, and also a pissant who directs his anger at any old shit unrelated to real problems. Like honestly you have to fucking whine about Lemmy on a song after he died? Come on.

Feederz and Crass share genre space but honestly if they met in real life Crass and their posse would probably beat the shit out of the guy from Feederz because of his mistreatment of animals. (he would tape cockroaches to himself during shows)

It is absolutely understandable that one would want to tone down the rough image of the more raw punk artists who actually had convictions because usually to the average listener it sounds.. too much.

I do think punk is exploitative of an aesthetic, mentality, and subculture that is only accurately expressed in anarchopunk. From the beginning, bands like the Sex Pistols were largely operating as super capitalist marketing schemes to sell angry teens things and counteract any real culture jamming done by punk music.
