Oh no.

Oh this is gonna be BAD.

Millions of old registration forms are just going to be unfinishable now. Great. Good.

@sc some image hoster got shut down or something?

The less invasive and annoying recaptcha method will be discontinued

@Mirzaba @sc okay i looked it up. calls to the old api will no longer be returned soon. so um okay. this seems to be an issue of, if you’re using a distributed system then keep your software up to date type issue right?

@rotatingskull @sc @Mirzaba yes, and the issue is "what happens to old abandoned sites that still work?" you can't keep software up-to-date if the admin isn't managing it anymore.

@trwnh @Mirzaba @sc Right. So you were using a computer system that someone else was letting you use for free. They just turned their computer off, and now you’re mad at them. Okay.

@rotatingskull @sc @Mirzaba that's not what the issue is and you know it. it's not as simple as "someone turned their computer off". it's about the ecosystem that's about to be inaccessible.

@trwnh @Mirzaba @sc Maybe don’t build an ecosystem on a computer you have absolutely no control over?

@rotatingskull @sc @Mirzaba so, the web shouldn't exist? ok, that seems reasonable

@trwnh @Mirzaba @sc All my Websites still work. Somehow I found a way to do it without making calls to random, anonymous machines that they might turn off with no notice. Huh.

@rotatingskull @sc @Mirzaba have you ever visited someone else's website, or do you only ever load your own websites?

@trwnh @Mirzaba @sc You got me. I never visit anyone else’s Websites. Bye.

@Mirzaba @sc @rotatingskull in other words: it's about the computers that are still on, but unmaintained and frozen in time, that will be inaccessible because they depend on something that no longer exists. it's about the new people who will be unable to gain entry to an otherwise-working network of old websites. forums, comment forms, etc etc, all technically online but inoperable because of one ubiquitous dependency installed over a decade ago.
