so yeah. the onboarding modal needs improvement and mastodon in general needs better help functionality. but getting rid of it altogether i don't think is the right approach. especially not in favour of an email. that's my take

in general it's a bad idea to put this kind of important functionality in the hands of a third party anyway!! what if that email winds up in a spam folder!! what if the user doesn't delete it but just can't find it later!! what if it never gets delivered!! there's too many needless possibilities for failure.

secondly, i really don't like the fact that in order to learn how to use the app you have to (a) *leave the app*, and (b) more importantly, have already remembered to save the email and now have the ability to find it. forcing users to take an action (archiving an email) before they know whether they will need the results of the action (the ability to look back at the instructions) is really bad UX. the information in the email should be public and always available.

here is an image of what the email sent to users in place of the modal will look like. one thing i noticed right away is that it's. all text. no images. now i'm a writer and i love words but having an introduction that is all text is only good for an incredibly narrow subset of users with a very particular learning style. most people will not get a lot out of it. this isn't a textbook they're studying for class. https://glitch.social/media/i3J2VwDcMz1vx6m9n1I https://glitch.social/media/AMCIji-6J7RNymEE7Sk

so part of me being sad about it being removed is that shel is smart and really knows hir stuff and i don't like seeing that work just being dropped from the app without any real discussion or acknowledgement. (discussion is kind of moot at this point because the PR has already been merged.) but it's not *just* that.

historical note: the onboarding modal was originally designed by @shel after a lot of hard work and frustration and negotiation with upstream in the middle of April when a bunch of new users were joining the site and getting confused because they were plopped straight in with no explanation on how things work. the final result isn't perfect but it was a compromise between trying to explain things well and being succinct and appeasing what upstream wanted lol.

the issue states that the reason for getting rid of the onboarding modal in favour of just sending an email is that most users skip the modal initially and with an email you can always check it later. i think this is true but that getting rid of the modal is the wrong solution since people tend to also delete emails lol. instead, on the fork we added a button to the More… section which lets you reöpen the onboarding modal after you've closed it. https://glitch.social/media/aKlnCaKRSnSp4SejebE

so there's an issue here https://github.com/tootsuite/mastodon/pull/6273 with an accompanying pull request to remove the onboarding modal from mastodon and i want to give some thoughts about that so i'm going to go do that now
