Just a thing that irritated me last night and I can't get out of my head this morning: CWs are not tags. They are not to increase the number of viewers of a post - they don't act that way. They are to protect the reader.

Sometimes I might CW something in a way that you feel is an overreaction, but I do it so that people sensitive to that stuff (even if only temporarily) don't read it. If I see that the thing goes even near contentious territory and my brain is working properly, it will get a cw for that.

I really like the "set deliverable goals".

The advice I give people who ask, in academia, is "one forward step a week", basically.

I think it's so EASY to get overwhelmed with "look at all this shit I have to do" that making a realistic schedule for it to happen is HARD.

It is okay to spend a day just treading water. It is okay to spend a day working on a thing with nothing to show for it.

relatedly, there aren't "too many PhDs" just because not everyone with a PhD ends up in an academic job.

There aren't "too many philosophy majors" because most people with a BA in philosophy end up doing something else (replace with your subject of choice).

People who want to learn, and put work in, should be rewarded with knowledge, even if it's not essential for their future career.

It is okay for you to change what you want to do in the middle of your career.

Stop worrying about the fact that so many people have "unemployable" degrees when we haven't addressed the fact that the total number of jobs is declining.

The humanities are important. Having people learn that shit is important - if no one learns it, soon enough no one will know it. This is not okay - we should not be fighting, as a society, FOR knowledge loss.

Related to this, unpaid labor in academia is a HUGE issue.

I want to pay this kid because I am benefiting from his work, but without a grant, it would be out of pocket (I applied for a grant so that I can pay him and others like him).

The people who can afford to work for free are people who are privileged enough to not have to work several dozen hours each week for money to support themselves.

Stop reinforcing this privilege.

So when I started this job I took over mentoring this kid

He has some health issues and is permanently immunocompromised so he has to work remotely. He also works for free. (He is doing research with me so that he can keep his foot in the game for eventual grad school).

He is constantly apologizing for "not getting more done" because "being in the hospital really wore [him] out"
