@tek yeah much as I hate peppermint in all it's forms I will never not use a peppermint toothpaste because 1) association (minty = clean) and 2) basically half the reason I dislike mint is toothpaste so I don't want to ruin other flavors/smells
that said, a diluted clove oil rinse is a good mouth numbing thing if you have tooth pain (still better to, you know, go to the dentist, but good in a pinch)

It's a complicated thing including the fact that queer spaces are often dominated by gay men and women in them are often assumed to be allies.
There's also a lot of not - so - passive misgendering that goes on if you're a sexual person uninterested in most male attention.
